Power Harbinger

The GW2 harbinger build for open world is the Necromancer that gave away the thing Necromancers are known for. There is no second health bar here — Harbinger Shroud leaves you exposed and stacks Blight that cuts your maximum health while you stand in it. What you get instead is fear, and fear is a damage button: every source of it on the bar switches on a damage bonus, and everything you steal back arrives as barrier.

Equipment

One set of Marauder across all fifteen slots — power, precision, ferocity and vitality. The vitality is not optional here. Harbinger trades the Necromancer’s second health bar away and then stacks Blight that reduces your maximum health while you are in shroud, so you are starting from less than a Necromancer normally has. Necromancer wears light armour. Exotic Marauder is enough to start.

Armor · Rune of the Scholar 6
Trinkets · Marauder 6
Weapons · Dagger/Warhorn and Axe/Sword 4

Four weapons, and three of them carry a fear. The warhorn has Wail of Doom, the sword has Devouring Visage, and Doom Approaches adds one to the shroud. That is the reason for the four-weapon spread: it is not versatility, it is making sure the Dread window is never more than one press away. Force on the main hands, Accuracy on the off hands.

Weapon alternatives why this one

One relic, and it feeds the only defensive layer the build has.

Relic · Mist Stranger 1
Consumables · Food and utility 2

Avocado Smoothie and Mist-Infused Sharpening Stone, both taken from GuildJen’s version of this build. The food gives +80 power and +60 ferocity. The utility item converts what you already have: power from 3% precision and 6% ferocity.

Consumable alternatives our picks, not the source's

Cheap, craftable, always available — and chosen for power gear, not for this build in particular. These are our picks, not the source’s.

How the build works

Dread is the whole build. Inflicting fear on a foe gives you boons and increases your strike damage for a few seconds. Everything else on this page is arranged around producing a fear and then spending the window that follows — which is why the source calls its sequences “Dread Combos” rather than a rotation.

  • Fear — warhorn, sword or shroud — any of them
  • Dread — boons and a damage bonus for a few seconds
  • The combo — spend the window, do not open with it
  • Siphon — Vampiric and Vampiric Presence steal health back
  • Blood Bank — health gained turns into barrier
  • Shroud — damage window, and Blight starts eating your health

Do not open with the big presses. Ghastly Claws and Life Siphon are the two longest channels in the kit and both of them want to land inside the damage bonus, not before it. The discipline the build asks for is holding the combo pieces until you have most of them ready, then firing the fear and dumping everything into the few seconds afterwards.

Skills

Four elixirs and a signet. Elixir of Promise is the heal. Bolstering Brew makes every elixir grant protection, so the utility bar is also the mitigation bar — which matters on a build with no shroud to hide inside. Plague Signet is the odd one out and it is there for Signets of Suffering, which makes signets steal health and strip boons. Malicious Swarm quietly fires a Lesser Signet of the Locust every time you press your heal.

  • Heal — Elixir of Promise
  • Utility — Elixir of Ignorance
  • Utility — Elixir of Anguish
  • Utility — Plague Signet
  • Elite — Elixir of Ambition

Traits

Spite for Dread, Blood Magic for the sustain, Harbinger for the shroud. Read the middle line first — it is the one keeping you alive.

Where the survivability actually comes from

Vampiric (a minor) siphons health whenever you hit something. Vampiric Presence extends that to nearby allies and increases it while you are in shroud. On their own those are small numbers on a light-armour class.

Blood Bank is what makes them matter: health you gain is converted into a proportionate amount of barrier, and the conversion rate goes up while you are already at full health. So the siphoning does not top you up, it builds you a shield — which is exactly the layer Harbinger gave away when it replaced Death Shroud. Alchemic Vigor adds to it from the other side, healing you every second for each stack of Blight you are carrying.

Implacable Foe covers the moment that layer is thinnest: stability and damage reduction when you enter Harbinger Shroud, plus ferocity scaled off your vitality — which is a second reason the Marauder set is not just a survivability choice.

Rotation

Three combos and one rule: fear first, then everything. Which combo you use depends on which weapon set is up, and the shroud counts as a third set.

Leave the shroud as soon as the combo is spent. Blight accumulates the whole time you are in there and it reduces your maximum health — the shroud is a damage window, not a place to stand.

The source is unusually honest about the cost, and we are quoting it rather than softening it: this is a high-risk playstyle, active dodging and positioning are required to survive, and the whole thing works “so long as you don’t get one-shot”. It is the only build in this set whose own author writes down a real drawback.

The honest verdict

B

Tier B for open world. Four questions decide it, and the answers come from this page:

  • Holds a champion alonepartly
  • Kills trash quicklyyes
  • One gear set, no rotationno
  • Helps the people next to youpartly

Our judgement, not a measurement — 2026-09-13.

What it is good at, and what it is not:

It is the thinnest build on this list. Light armour, a health pool reduced further by Blight, and no second bar to retreat into — the barrier is real but it has to be earned by hitting things, which is not something you can do while you are running away. It also has the weakest second-source position of the eight: MetaBattle’s open-world section carries a condition Harbinger, not a power one, so for this exact combination of power, Marauder and open world there is one source, not two.

What you get back is a damage profile no other Necromancer build has. Fear is everywhere on this bar and Dread turns each one into boons and a strike-damage bonus, so the build rewards a kind of play that is closer to a fighting game than to a rotation: set up the opening, fire it, cash in. When it works it is very fast. When it does not, you are a light-armour class standing in melee with less health than you started with.

We picked power rather than condition here on purpose. Our celestial Reaper already covers the condition Necromancer for open world, and putting a second condition build next to it would have the two competing for the same readers and the same search term.

Questions

Is Harbinger good for open world in GW2?

It is fast and it is fragile, and which of those matters more depends on how you play. Harbinger gives up the Necromancer’s usual safety net — there is no second health bar, and Blight reduces your maximum health while you are in shroud. In exchange it has the highest burst the profession offers. If you want a Necromancer that forgives mistakes, take a Reaper.

Why is fear the most important thing on this bar?

Because of Dread: inflicting fear on a foe grants you boons and increases your strike damage for a short time. Three separate sources of fear are built into the kit — Wail of Doom on the warhorn, Devouring Visage on the sword, and the improved shroud skills through Doom Approaches. The rotation is a set of combos you fire inside that window.

How does a Harbinger survive without a second health bar?

Barrier rather than health. Vampiric and Vampiric Presence siphon health whenever you hit something, and Blood Bank converts health you gain into a proportionate amount of barrier — at a better rate while you are already full. Alchemic Vigor heals you per second for each stack of Blight, and Implacable Foe adds stability and damage reduction on entering shroud.

What stats should a Harbinger use in open world?

Marauder for this build: power, precision, ferocity and vitality. The vitality is doing two jobs — it offsets the health Blight takes away, and Implacable Foe converts a share of it into ferocity, so it is not a purely defensive stat here. Exotic is enough to start.

Power or condition Harbinger?

Both work. We built the power version because our celestial Reaper already covers the condition Necromancer for open world, and two condition builds would compete with each other. Be aware that MetaBattle’s open-world list carries a condition Harbinger and not a power one — for this exact combination the source count is one, not two.

Should I stay in Harbinger Shroud?

No. Blight accumulates while you are in there and it reduces your maximum health, and Doom Approaches makes it accumulate faster in exchange for improved shroud skills. Enter, fire the combo, leave. It is a damage window, not a defensive state.

Why is a signet on an elixir build?

For Signets of Suffering, which makes signets steal health and remove boons from the foes they affect. Plague Signet is the cheapest way to have a signet on the bar at all, and the health it steals goes through Blood Bank like everything else.

About this build

The power Harbinger is a GW2 harbinger build for open world PvE: Marauder gear on every slot, Rune of the Scholar, Relic of the Mist Stranger, and the Spite, Blood Magic and Harbinger trait lines with dagger/warhorn and axe/sword. Its damage runs through Dread — inflicting fear grants boons and a strike-damage bonus, and three of the four weapons plus the improved shroud skills can produce one. Its survivability is barrier rather than health: Vampiric and Vampiric Presence siphon, Blood Bank converts what you gain into barrier, Alchemic Vigor heals per stack of Blight, and Implacable Foe adds stability and damage reduction on entering shroud. Harbinger Shroud is a damage window rather than a retreat, because Blight reduces your maximum health while you stand in it. It is the thinnest build of its set and the only one whose source names its own drawbacks.

Traits and skills decoded from the in-game build template and verified against the official Guild Wars 2 API, which also supplies the icons; item, rune, sigil and relic identities read from /v2/items. Build based on GuildJen’s Power Harbinger open world build, last updated there 30 July 2026; GuildJen publishes no patch stamp. MetaBattle’s open-world Harbinger is a condition build and Hardstuck’s power Harbinger is for group PvE — neither describes this one.
