Power Untamed
The GW2 untamed build for open world is the one with a switch in the middle of it. F5 decides whether you are unleashed or your pet is, and the two states do opposite things: yours raises your damage and opens ambush skills, the pet's cuts the damage you take. It is the hardest build in this set to play and the only one two independent sources list for open world by name.
Equipment
Dragon on the armour and trinkets, Berserker on the weapons. That split is the source’s own, and it is deliberate: Dragon adds vitality on the nine slots where you are buying survivability anyway, and Berserker keeps the two weapons purely offensive. Ranger wears medium armour. Exotic is enough to start.
Both weapons take Accuracy alongside Force. Flat critical-hit chance is worth more here than it looks, because Vicious Quarry adds crit chance on top whenever you have fury, and the weapon swap itself hands you fury through Furious Grip. The two stack, and the swap is on a short cd.
Weapon alternatives why these ones
The relic and the second sigil, both chosen for what the rest of the build already does.
Avocado Smoothie and Mist-Infused Sharpening Stone, both taken from GuildJen’s version of this build. The food gives +80 power and +60 ferocity. The utility item converts what you already have: power from 3% precision and 6% ferocity.
Consumable alternatives our picks, not the source's
Cheap, craftable, always available — and chosen for power gear, not for this build in particular. These are our picks, not the source’s.
How the build works
Unleash is a toggle, not a cooldown. While you are unleashed, Vow of the Untamed raises your outgoing strike damage and your skill 1 is replaced by an ambush. While your pet is unleashed, the same trait reduces the damage you take and the pet’s three skills become larger area versions. You want to be the unleashed one most of the time and flip it when something is about to hit you.
- Unleash Ranger — F5 — your damage goes up, ambush opens
- Ambush — replaces skill 1 for a few seconds, and it heals you
- Frost Trap — chill, and chill is a damage modifier here
- Hammer 4 and 5 — disables, and disables pay boons
- Weapon swap — fury, swiftness, and the ambush is back
- Unleash Pet — F5 again — damage taken drops while its skills fire
The chill is a damage stat. Predator’s Onslaught increases the strike damage you and your pet deal to foes that are disabled, defiant or movement-impaired — and its own text lists chilled among those. Frost Trap is therefore not utility, it is the modifier you re-apply, and Trapper’s Expertise lengthens it and adds cripple on top. Every hammer disable does the same job for a shorter time.
Skills
Frost Trap is the damage skill on this bar, for the reason above. Healing Spring is a water field that also removes conditions while you stand in it. “Protect Me!” puts the damage on your pet for a few seconds, which pairs with the pet-unleashed state rather than fighting it. Storm Spirit is the only pure damage utility. Forest’s Fortification is the elite and it is a panic button, not an opener.
- Heal — Healing Spring
- Utility — "Protect Me!"
- Utility — Frost Trap
- Utility — Storm Spirit
- Elite — Forest's Fortification
Traits
Marksmanship for the damage modifiers, Skirmishing for the critical-hit engine, Untamed for the toggle.
- Marksmanship — Hunter's Gaze · Farsighted · Predator's Onslaught
- Skirmishing — Trapper's Expertise · Fang and Claw · Vicious Quarry
- Untamed — Blinding Outburst · Enhancing Impact · Let Loose
Two picks that do less than they look like they do
Farsighted increases the damage of ranger weapon skills and increases it further against foes above the range threshold. This build carries a hammer and a greatsword. The base half of the trait works; the half the trait is named for does nothing, because you are never at that range. It is still the best adept pick in the line for a melee build, and it is worth knowing that you are taking it for the smaller number.
Fang and Claw grants increased precision and ferocity to feline, avian and drake pets, and grants fury around the ranger when beast skills are used. The two pets in the published build code are a Sky-Chak Striker and a Rock Gazelle, and the wiki lists both under Unique rather than any of those three families. The pet-stat half of this trait does nothing for the pets the build ships with. The fury half works, and fury is what Vicious Quarry converts into ferocity and crit chance, so the pick still earns its slot — through its second sentence, not its first.
We are not calling that a mistake in the source. It is the kind of thing that only shows up when you read the trait text and the pet list next to each other, and it changes what you should swap if you ever change pets: put a feline, an avian or a drake in and the first half switches on.
Rotation
Trap first, unleash second, then whichever weapon is up. Swap on cooldown even when you do not need the other weapon — Let Loose refreshes Unleashed Power on swap, which is how the ambush skill comes back.
The pet-unleashed window is short by design. Fire the three skills, take the damage reduction while you need it, and flip back — your damage bonus is switched off the whole time the pet has it.
The source says outright that the rotation should be broken rather than waited on: the pet’s unleashed abilities often will not be ready when you want to flip, and delaying the rest of the sequence to wait for them costs more than skipping them.
The honest verdict
Tier A for open world. Four questions decide it, and the answers come from this page:
- Holds a champion alonepartly
- Kills trash quicklyyes
- One gear set, no rotationno
- Helps the people next to youyes
Our judgement, not a measurement — 2026-09-13.
What it is good at, and what it is not:
It is the hardest build in this set — the source rates it 75 %, against 50 % for everything else here — and the difficulty is not execution speed, it is that there is a state machine on top of the rotation. Flip at the wrong time and you have switched off your own damage bonus. It also has no ranged option despite being a ranger, and one of its trait picks is a range trait that mostly does not apply.
What you get back is the only build on this list that two independent sources name for open world specifically: MetaBattle’s open-world section carries a boon-DPS power Untamed and Hardstuck carries a booster Untamed under the same heading. It brings quickness to the people around it through Let Loose, it heals itself off its ambush skills, and the pet toggle is a genuine damage reduction rather than a cosmetic mechanic.
Build code
Paste this into an empty build template slot in-game. The traits, skills and both pets on this page were decoded from this exact code and checked against the official Guild Wars 2 API. The code carries skills, traits, pets and weapons only — gear, stat prefixes, runes and sigils are not in it.
[&DQQIGh43SBehAHgAuwC4ALUAvwC2ALsADxvtAEQ7AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA=] Questions
Is Untamed good for open world in GW2?
Yes, and it is the one specialisation in this set that two independent build sites list for open world by name rather than adapting an instanced build. The catch is difficulty: the Ranger’s unleash toggle is a state you manage on top of the usual rotation, and getting it wrong switches off your own damage bonus.
What does unleashing actually change?
Vow of the Untamed increases your outgoing strike damage while you are unleashed, and reduces the strike damage you take while your pet is unleashed. Unleashing yourself also opens ambush skills, which replace your skill 1 for a few seconds and siphon health through Natural Fortitude. Unleashing the pet turns its three skills into larger area versions.
Why is a trap the most important skill on a power build?
Because Predator’s Onslaught increases the damage you and your pet deal to disabled, defiant or movement-impaired foes, and chilled is on that list. Frost Trap is the cheapest and longest source of chill on the bar, and Trapper’s Expertise extends it further. Keeping the chill up is a damage rotation, not crowd control.
What stats should an Untamed use in open world?
Dragon on armour and trinkets, Berserker on both weapons — that is the split the source publishes. Dragon adds vitality where you are already paying for survivability; the weapons stay purely offensive. Exotic is enough to start.
Which pets does this build use?
A Sky-Chak Striker and a Rock Gazelle, both read out of the build code rather than chosen by us. Worth knowing: Fang and Claw’s precision and ferocity bonus applies only to feline, avian and drake pets, and the wiki lists both of these as Unique. The fury half of that trait still works, which is the half this build actually needs.
Untamed or Soulbeast for open world?
Soulbeast if you want one gear set and a build that forgives mistakes — our celestial Soulbeast is that build. Untamed if you want more damage and are willing to manage a toggle for it. Untamed also shares quickness with whoever is standing near you, which Soulbeast does not.
Do I have to swap weapons even when I like the one I am holding?
Yes. Tail Wind and Furious Grip give swiftness and fury on swap, Vicious Quarry turns that fury into ferocity and critical-hit chance, and Let Loose refreshes Unleashed Power so your ambush skill is available again. The swap is three buffs and a reset with a weapon change attached.
About this build
The power Untamed is a GW2 untamed build for open world PvE: Dragon armour and trinkets, Berserker hammer and greatsword, Rune of the Scholar, Relic of Zakiros, and the Marksmanship, Skirmishing and Untamed trait lines. Its mechanic is the unleash toggle — Vow of the Untamed raises your strike damage while you are unleashed and reduces incoming damage while the pet is, and unleashing yourself opens ambush skills that siphon health through Natural Fortitude. Frost Trap is the damage skill rather than a utility, because Predator’s Onslaught pays out against chilled, disabled and defiant foes. The weapon swap is a reset: swiftness and fury from the Skirmishing minors, crit chance from Vicious Quarry, and a refreshed ambush from Let Loose. It is the hardest build of its set at 75 % difficulty, it has no ranged option, and it is the only one two independent sources list for open world by name.
Traits, skills and pets decoded from the in-game build template and verified against the official Guild Wars 2 API, which also supplies the icons; item and upgrade identities read from /v2/items, pet identities from /v2/pets. Build based on GuildJen’s Power Untamed open world build, last updated there 30 July 2026; GuildJen publishes no patch stamp. MetaBattle and Hardstuck each carry a different open-world Untamed — the builds should not be mixed. Builds shift with every balance patch; last checked 13 September 2026.
