Power Willbender

The GW2 willbender build most open world players end up on is this one: the fastest Guardian in the game, built to close the distance and empty a burst into whatever it lands on. Every virtue activation stacks a damage bonus, the heal skill switches on your crit chance, and a relic heals you for the damage you deal. It hits extremely hard for about six seconds, and then you have to think.

Equipment

One set of Dragon across all fifteen slots. Dragon is power, precision, ferocity and vitality — the three numbers a burst build needs plus the one that keeps you alive while you are standing inside the pack you just pulled together. Guardian wears heavy armour. Exotic is fine to start; ascended is a few percent and agony resistance you only need in fractals.

Armor · Rune of the Scholar 6
Trinkets · Dragon 6
Weapons · Sword/Sword and Greatsword 3

Two sets that both close distance. The swords open — Symbol of Blades goes down first and Advancing Strike is a shadowstep — and the greatsword finishes, because Binding Blade is the only thing on the bar that drags a pack onto the symbols you already planted. Neither set is the ranged answer. Zealot's Defense on sword 3 is the closest this build gets, and it is a channel you have to stand still for.

Weapon alternatives why these ones

One relic and two sigils, and each of them is a choice the source actually published rather than a number we liked.

Relic 1
Consumables · Food and utility 2

Avocado Smoothie and Mist-Infused Sharpening Stone, both taken from GuildJen’s version of this build. The food gives +80 power and +60 ferocity. The utility item converts what you already have: power from 3% precision and 6% ferocity.

Consumable alternatives our picks, not the source's

Cheap, craftable, always available — and chosen for power gear, not for this build in particular. These are our picks, not the source’s.

How the build works

Willbender takes the three virtues off your bar and turns them into movement. Rushing Justice, Flowing Resolve and Crashing Courage all send you somewhere and leave an effect behind, which is why this specialisation is the fastest thing a Guardian can play — and why the burst is built around being in the middle of a pack rather than in front of it.

  • Symbol of Blades — sword 2 — the burst starts on the ground
  • Rushing Justice — F1 — now every hit burns
  • Swap — greatsword, while the symbol still ticks
  • Binding Blade — greatsword 5 pulls the pack onto the symbol
  • Whirling Wrath — greatsword 2 into a stack that cannot walk away
  • Virtues again — F2 cleanses, F3 blocks — or you leave

The order matters more than the numbers, and the reason is a minor trait. Lethal Tempo hands you a stacking damage bonus every time a virtue fires or one of its passives triggers, and Tyrant’s Momentum makes those stacks bigger at the cost of duration — so the virtues are a damage engine you keep feeding, not three buttons you hold for emergencies. Holy Reckoning adds fury when you press Rushing Justice, and Furious Focus pays out increased strike damage and movement speed while you have fury and drops a free Lesser Symbol of Blades on the same press. One button, four effects. Then swap — the symbol keeps ticking while you hold a different weapon.

Skills

Litany of Wrath is not really a heal skill on this build — it is the damage switch. It heals for a share of the damage you deal, which is already worth the most while you are pressing everything. But Healer’s Resolution grants resolution when you use a heal skill, Righteous Instincts turns resolution into crit chance and might, and Retribution increases strike damage while you have it. Pressing your heal raises your damage output. Whirling Light is a lunge that weakens and burns everything it passes through — cleave damage and a reposition in one press. “Stand Your Ground!” is the stability that lets Whirling Wrath finish its channel. Contemplation of Purity converts your conditions into boons. Heaven’s Palm evades, shadowsteps and knocks down — the panic button that buys the seconds the build otherwise does not have.

  • Elite — Heaven's Palm

Traits

Three lines: Zeal for symbol and greatsword damage, Radiance for the critical-hit engine, Willbender for the virtues. The gold line runs through the three picks in each. Read them as one chain rather than nine separate bonuses — resolution feeds crit chance, crit chance feeds damage output, and the virtues keep the whole thing on a short cd.

Specialisations 3
  • Zeal — Fiery Wrath · Zealous Blade · Furious Focus
  • Radiance — Healer's Resolution · Retribution · Righteous Instincts
  • Willbender — Conceited Curate · Holy Reckoning · Tyrant's Momentum

The one place the source contradicts itself

The build page lists Healer’s Resolution under “Alternatives” — as something you might take in Radiance if you want more resolution. The published build code picks it anyway. We decoded the code and checked all nine major traits against the official API, and Healer’s Resolution is the Radiance adept selection in the build the page actually hands you.

We built the page from the code, not the sentence — and the code is right. Resolution is not a defensive afterthought here. Righteous Instincts converts it into critical strike chance and might, and Retribution converts it into strike damage. Taking the trait that generates resolution is the single cheapest way to switch both on, and the only skill that does it is the one you were going to press anyway.

The other pick worth reading twice is Conceited Curate. It grants vitality, and it makes Willbender Flames heal you when they strike an enemy. Willbender Flames are what every virtue leaves behind, so on a build that fires virtues constantly it is a third sustain source on top of Litany of Wrath and the relic — and unlike the other two it costs you nothing to maintain.

Rotation

Two openings and one rule. The rule is that the symbols go down before the burst, not during it. Everything else is which weapon you happen to be holding when the fight starts.

If the pack survived all of that, you are in the dangerous part: no virtues, no greatsword cooldowns, and you are stood in melee. Leap of Faith or Flowing Resolve out, wait for the swap, and start again. The build does not have a way to grind a target down slowly.

Whirling Wrath is the longest press in the sequence and the one most likely to be wasted. It is a channel, so a pack that has not been pulled together yet will walk out of half of it. That is the whole reason Binding Blade goes first and gets pressed twice — the second press is the pull.

The honest verdict

B

Tier B for open world. Four questions decide it, and the answers come from this page:

  • Holds a champion alonepartly
  • Kills trash quicklyyes
  • One gear set, no rotationno
  • Helps the people next to youno

Our judgement, not a measurement — 2026-09-13.

What it is good at, and what it is not:

It is fragile the moment the cooldowns are gone, and the source says so itself: with nothing up you can be quite squishy. It has no real ranged option — Zealot’s Defense is a stationary channel, not a bow. And it asks you to learn two full weapon sets in order, because the burst is nine presses and skipping one of them costs most of the damage rather than a little of it.

What you get back is the fastest way a Guardian moves around open world and a burst that deletes a trash pack in about six seconds, with three healing sources — Litany of Wrath, Conceited Curate and Relic of Zakiros — that all pay out on damage dealt rather than on a timer. It rewards playing forward. It punishes hesitating.

One thing it does quietly help with: Holy Reckoning grants might to nearby allies whenever a virtue effect triggers. That is not a boon build and you should not bring it to an event expecting to hold anything for a squad, but standing next to people is worth slightly more than nothing.

Build code

Paste this into an empty build template slot in-game. The traits and skills on this page were decoded from this exact code and checked against the official Guild Wars 2 API. The code carries skills, traits and weapons only — gear, stat prefixes, runes and sigils are not in it.

Questions

What is the best solo Willbender build in Guild Wars 2?

For open world, the power Willbender on this page: Zeal, Radiance and Willbender, sword and sword into greatsword, and Dragon stats. It is the version that keeps the specialisation’s speed and adds enough vitality to survive being inside a pack. A celestial Willbender exists as well and trades burst for staying power — take that one if you would rather never worry about dying than clear a camp in six seconds.

Is Willbender good for open world?

Yes, with a caveat. It has the best mobility of any Guardian specialisation and one of the fastest trash-clears in the game, because all three virtues become leaps that leave damage behind. The caveat is that its defence is those same cooldowns: when they are down, it is a heavy-armour class with a light-armour survival plan.

What stats should a Willbender use in open world?

Dragon on every slot, including both weapon sets. Power, precision and ferocity carry the burst and vitality is the reason you survive standing in it. Berserker hits marginally harder and dies noticeably faster. Exotic Dragon is enough to start — ascended is a few percent.

Why does pressing the heal skill make a Willbender hit harder?

Because of a three-trait chain. Healer’s Resolution grants resolution when you use a heal skill; Righteous Instincts turns resolution into critical strike chance and might; Retribution increases your strike damage while you have it. Litany of Wrath already heals for a share of the damage you deal, so the correct time to press it is when you are about to do a lot of damage — not when you are low.

Why Rune of the Scholar and not something defensive?

Because Scholar’s bonus applies above ninety percent health, and this build is either at full health or in trouble — there is not much middle. Relic of Zakiros covers the defensive side instead by healing you for the damage you deal, which scales with how well the burst lands rather than with a cooldown.

How do I get Willbender in GW2?

Willbender is the Guardian elite specialisation from End of Dragons. You need that expansion on your account, a level 80 Guardian, and enough hero points to unlock the line — the specialisation itself, then its traits and skills. There is no other route; it is not available to free accounts.

Willbender or Dragonhunter for damage?

Dragonhunter is the more forgiving power Guardian and it can fight at range with the longbow. Willbender is faster and better at reaching the next pack, which in open world is most of your real clear speed. If you are measuring a single stationary target, take Dragonhunter. If you are measuring a map, take this.

Do I need the greatsword, or can I run sword and sword only?

You can, and you will lose the pull. Binding Blade is the only thing in the kit that drags a pack onto the symbols you already planted, and the symbols are where most of the damage happens. Dual swords alone is a single-target build wearing a burst build’s traits.

About this build

The power Willbender is a GW2 willbender build for open world PvE: Dragon gear on every slot, Rune of the Scholar, Relic of Zakiros, and the Zeal, Radiance and Willbender trait lines. It plays sword and sword into greatsword — Symbol of Blades first, Rushing Justice to switch burning on so Fiery Wrath pays out, then a weapon swap into Binding Blade to pull the pack onto both symbols and Whirling Wrath into the stack. All three virtues are movement skills on this specialisation, and every activation stacks Lethal Tempo, which is where the damage output actually comes from. Resolution is the second engine: Healer’s Resolution generates it, Righteous Instincts turns it into crit chance, Retribution turns it into strike damage. Sustain is three sources, all tied to hitting things — Litany of Wrath, Conceited Curate’s healing Willbender Flames, and the relic. It is a melee burst build with no ranged answer and a nine-press sequence, and it clears trash faster than anything else the profession has.

Traits and skills decoded from the in-game build template and verified against the official Guild Wars 2 API, which also supplies the icons; item, rune, sigil and relic identities read from /v2/items. Build based on GuildJen’s Power Willbender open world build, last updated there 30 July 2026; GuildJen publishes no patch stamp. MetaBattle and Snow Crows both list a power Willbender, but as an instanced-content build with different gear — the two should not be mixed.
